Craft projects we often see include tie dye on pillowcases, finger painting and brush painting on pillowcases and basically any other method imaginable of getting an image or color onto a pillowcase.

Recently one of our customers purchased our T-130 pillowcases for the local elementary school at which he teaches and gave us permission to share the amazing work he and his colleagues do.

He explained that each student was given a pillowcase and instructions on how to turn the pillowcase into a “Super Hero Cape.” He further explained that the students were taught about the importance of dreaming big and making their pillowcase into any super hero cape they would like to be that day (doctors, teachers, athletes, Hulk, cultural things, etc).

The school then scheduled a whole day for the students to wear their capes and show them off and talk about them with their classmates and teachers!

Our customer, the teacher, told us it was just incredible. He said, “It was such an eye opening experience to see all the amazing things that the students came up with.”

He spoke of the satisfaction and excitement that the project generated- this project of dreaming big.

What is thread count in sheets and pillowcases? Does it matter?

Advertisements for sheets and pillowcases display either a “T” in front a number or a “TC” following a number. This stands for thread count. For example, T300, 300TC, etc…The thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. Generally, the higher the thread count the softer the pillowcase will feel. However, a January 2008 Consumer Reports article said,

“Thread counts between 200 and 400 are fine. Within that range, a higher number may provide a softer feel. With counts over 400, the main difference is price.”

When you make a buying decision for pillowcases keep in mind your intended purpose for the pillowcases. If you are planning to use the pillowcases on a bed that is used regularly a higher thread count may be preferred. Lower thread counts such as 130TC are great for summer camps, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, craft projects or virtually any low cost pillowcase needs. A 130TC pillowcase is usually made of a Muslin blended material. This is a blend of fabric that may have slight fiber colors other then white. It will often look grey when the fabric is examined closely.

That being said, as in everything, each of us has different needs and ideas of what feels comfortable. Personally, I have slept for years on pillows covered with a T-130 pillowcases (130 thread count) with never a single lost night of sleep because of it!

Pillowcases and sheets come in various blends of materials and weaves. Whether buying pillowcases in bulk or buying just a dozen, here are the main differences between the materials used:

Made of 100% Cotton: Cotton is a natural substance that is farmed from the cotton plant. 100% cotton pillowcases or all cotton pillowcases are very soft. Cotton is not a man-made material, and is therefore very natural. A cotton pillowcase will shrink a little when washed. A cotton pillowcase will also wrinkle more easily when removed from the wash. Some people will even iron cotton pillowcases to make them look the best.
Made of 100% Egyptian Cotton: These pillowcases have the same attributes shown in a cotton pillowcase discussed above. However, Egyptian cotton comes from long staple cotton grown in Egypt and the long staple makes it very soft.

Cotton Polyester Blend: These pillowcases are made using material that was blended together with natural cotton and a man made fiber called polyester. A blended cotton polyester pillowcase will shrink less then 100% cotton. In addition, this type of blend will come out of the wash usually looking less wrinkled and does not require ironing to make a nice finish.

Pure Finish Percale: This fabric has a smooth finish and is tightly woven. It generally has a brighter appearance and will last much longer in the laundry. It comes in either 100% cotton or blended fabrics.

Mercerized Cotton: This is a special kind of cotton yarn that is more lustrous than conventional cotton. Trying to decide which pillowcase are right for you?

Here are some common questions we receive about pillowcases:

What is thread count? When you look at an ad for a pillowcase it has a T in front of a number. For example, T-130, T-180, etc…. This stands for thread count. The thread count is the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. The higher the thread count the softer the pillowcase will feel.

So to bring this concept home, the T-130 thread count pillowcases will often be an economy (or least expensive) pillowcase, while a T-250 will tend to be more expensive.

What is the difference in the type of material in a pillowcase? You can buy pillowcases with various blends of materials.

100% cotton pillowcases will shrink more in the wash then blended pillowcases. They also tend to be softer, and for those of us who love all cotton, feel not only soft but very natural. These can be ordered by the dozen or in bulk.
Blended pillowcases sold in the USA typically have a higher percentage of cotton. For example 55% cotton 45% polyester. One reason why the blend is higher in cotton is that the import duty rate on a pillowcase that has more polyester is higher. The blends tend to wrinkle less. Pillowcases that have color are pillowcases that have been dyed a certain color, eg, brown or blue or green. These can be both used for institutional purposes as well as just providing some color to a bedroom.

What is the HEM of a pillowcase? On the open end of a pillowcase you will find either a surged or folded over sewn hem. A surged pillowcase has no hem. The hem can range from 1” to 4” depending on the pillowcase. A person embroidering pillowcases often wants a larger hem on a pillowcase because they often embroider the hem with a design.

What are the uses for pillowcases? Besides the obvious use of protecting pillows, pillowcases also can be used for embroidery, screen printing, painting, crafts (sleepovers, birthdays, daycare, schools, etc…), pillowcase dresses, hotels, motels, military, Halloween costumes, and more… We even had a person purchase our pillowcases to pack moose meat out of the woods in northern Minnesota...the ideas are endless.

Make sure you have the proper size pillowcase that will fit the pillow. Common size pillows and cases will be standard, queen and king size. A queen size pillowcase is often also used for a standard size pillow.
Place the pillow between your chin and chest and hold it tightly. Make sure the pillow is held in the lengthwise position toward the floor.
Grasp the open end of the pillowcase with both hands. Place the pillowcase below the pillow and slide the open end of the pillowcase up and over the pillow.
Let go of the pillow between the chest and chin and shake the pillowcase over the pillow with both hands.

How to Make a Pillowcase Dress?

First you need to gather up the supplies you need to make a pillowcase dress. You will need a pillowcase, sewing pins, an iron, a measuring tape measure, elastic, ribbons (4 ribbons 3" wide x 14" long) , one yard of extra fabric and scissors.
Plug in the iron and warm it up. Then lay out the pillowcase and iron it so it is flat and smooth. This will make sure that the pillowcase is even when you begin cutting and designing the layout.
After the pillowcase is ironed flat turn the open end of the pillowcase away from you. Measure 2" down from the sewed side (not the open side) and cut a straight line across 2" down. You will be cutting the entire edge of the sewn side off.
Next create a template for cutting out the arm holes. The template should be 2.25" wide by 5.25" high. Then trace the template on the top portion of the pillowcase on the side you cut off. Then cut the armholes out and set the pillowcase aside.
Take out the extra yard of fabric and cut a 2.5"x45" strip of fabric. Fold both ends of the fabric (2.5" portion) toward the middle and pin down the entire length. Iron flat when finished. This piece of fabric will fit over the portion of the pillowcase where you cut the arm holes. Slide the folded fabric over the cut area to creat a binding for the arm holes and then sew to the pillowcase using your sewing machine. Repeat this step for the other arm hole.
Then take the ribbons and elastic. Fold the ribbons over the elastic and then sew down the ribbon encasing the elastic. These ribbons will be used for the shoulders of the pillowcase dress. Determine the size of the child that will wear the dress and make the shoulder straps the appropriate length. The ribbons will tie at the top to allow the user to adjust for size. Sew the ribbons to the inside of the dress just above the arm holes you cut.
Take the remaining ribbon with elastic inside and sew it to the center of the dress. Make sure you have the elastic pulled slightly to bring the waist of the dress in so the pillowcase dress will hug the waist of the child.

Every year I host a retreat at the beach for a group of special needs kids and their families. Our children have such a rare condition that there are not many of them in the world so it's hard to find support. The children have to endure numerous surgeries just to survive. They also have to put up with stares and bullying due to their condition and appearance. This retreat is a place where we can all come together and give each other love and support. In years past I have gotten autograph animals for every child but the prices keep going up and it's hard for our little non-profit organization to afford them. I thought that this year the children could take the pillow cases around and have their friends autograph them and draw pictures using fabric pens. The pillowcases will make a wonderful memento of a wonderful time with their friends where they were able to just be themselves without worrying about anything but having fun. Use for girls dresses
I know their just pillow cases. But pillow cases are very costly at a department store. I know so many families that would really appreciate a brite new pillow case for their family members. These simple items are soo taken for granted. I would love to give my pillow cases to alot of friends and family. Money has been very tight for so many. They havent any extra money for these extravegant items.
I work at a rural library Kinsman Free Public Library. We have lost approx. 1/3 of our funding in the last few years. Every year we have a Summer Reading Program where patrons of all ages are encouraged to participate. We have been able to continue this through donations from area businesses and personal donations. This years theme is centered around reading at night. We are planning a pillowcase craft where the children will be able to decorate their own pillowcase. We normally have over 200 children participate in this program. Hopefully we can win these pillowcases to help offset the expense of this craft.

Our church women's retreat is a dream/pajama party theme and we want to decorate pillowcases!
My daughter is Miss Pennsylvania Jr. Teen. Her platform is Feeding the Hungry. The Salvation Army in Pottstown Pennsylvania houses families that have fallen on hard times. These are not families that are always homeless or people that don't want to work some are people where the husband lost his job and lost everything. We would donate these not only so that they can have a clean place to put their head more often as they could each get a couple cases but they could also let the kids use to have sac potato races one of my all time favorite games to play with kids!
A group of women have gotten together to make dresses from pillowcases for disadvantaged girls in our city and surrounding areas. Our goal is to make 250 dresses by July. If I win the pillowcases that equates to 120 dresses for little girls who otherwise would have very little to wear. I am the spouse of a soldier who is currently deployed in Afghanistan. Our spouses would like to help prepare Welcome Home baskets for returning soldiers. This is a great opportunity for the family members to rally together in the preparation for our returning soldiers. Before leaving single soldiers are required to pack their belongings in a box which will be put into storage for the duration of the deployment. I would like to ensure that all soldiers welcome home transition is as uncomplicated as possible. The baskets family members will put together will provide soldiers with fresh linens such as pillowcases and toiletries along with lite snacks for the first few days after re-deployment.

I am entering this contest to use the pillowcases for the 408 children who live in the woods here. I plan to craft them on top in a child/tween theme. I am also hoping to get the pillow protecters and pillows. Many of these children are honor students. They know it is the only way out. They are victims of home foreclosures. Their homes set empty deteriorating and owned by a bank that is losing money. It is such a small thing to do but as Mother Theres said “If you can't feed everyone just feed one."
If I won these pillowcases they would have two special purposes. First I would donate them to a local middle school after-school sewing club. They are in desperate need of supplies and the pillowcases would allow them to make pillowcase dresses and tops for themselves and for donation. I then would collect half of their completed dresses and mail them along with a donation to the non-profit agency Little Dresses for Africa. The pillowcase's would therefore be helping 7th and 8th grade girls in America as they learn how to sew and little girls all over the world who have no more then one old and tattered outfit to their name. HALLOWEEN & PILLOWCASE USES

It seems like Halloween 2010 just happened yesterday. My children are getting older but Halloween is still one of their favorite holidays. When my son was younger he really liked the Star Wars® movies and he wanted me to make him a star wars costume. I looked around the house and began to pull items together that I could use to put his costume together. The first year (when he was 7) I made a Tuscan Raider Costume, the following year he was an Imperial spy, and the last year he wanted me to make a Jawa costume. Two of the three costumes used a pillowcase under the masks to help form the inside of the costume so it fit correctly on his head. A pillowcase can be used as part of a costume. As I made my son his costumes I realized that there are a lot of other used for pillowcases during Halloween.

How kids can have fun with pillowcases during Halloween.

1) A pillowcase makes a great candy collection bag. If you have a pre-Halloween party for your kids you can buy a dozen pillowcases and have their friend come over to decorate their Halloween bags. You can use markers, glue, glitter or anything that personalizes the bag. You can also place some reflective tape or cloth on the bag so drivers can easily spot your children.

2) A white pillowcase can be wrapped around a small ball and tied to create a ghost. Use a marker and make some eyes on pillowcase. You can hang these in the trees or set them on your front porch to set the mood for a Halloween scare.

3) Depending on the size of your child you can turn your child into a ghost by using a white pillowcase. Simply cut an area out of the pillowcase for their head to go through and their arms. You can pull the pillowcase over the child like a shirt. Your child can decorate their costume with markers or paints.

4) A teacher could create an entire Halloween project around decorating pillowcases. Simply hand out pillowcases to each child in the classroom. Here is an attractive way to turn a pillowcases into a laundry bag.

Find a 12" Embroidery Hoop
Find a Standard Size Pillowcase that you think would make a nice looking laundry bag.
Attach the open end of the pillowcase to the embroidery hoop. Thumb screw the hoop together to hold the pillowcase in place.
Attach a rope or heavy string to the thumb screw area and make a rope hanger.
Hang up in your laundry room.

How to make a laundry bag

You can easily make a laundry bag out of a pillowcase. Depending on the size laundry bag you want to make you can choose from either a standard (20” x 30”), queen (20” x 36”) or king size (21” x 46”) pillowcase. In addition to the size there are many decorative style printed and/or color pillowcases to choose from so the designs on the bag are endless.

Easy & Fun to Make!!

First select your pillowcase that you want to use. Wash, dry and then iron the pillowcase. Using your sewing machine sew a seam about 1” below the existing hem seam on the pillowcase. You will be sewing a new seam that will serve as a casing for a cotton cloths line that you will run around the pillowcase. Make sure you leave a small amount of space open on the new seam so that the ends of the rope can hang out. Sew a reinforced end with cloth or just thread on the opening areas where the cord comes out of the casing. You should then make a knot at the end of each rope to prevent the rope from sliding out of the casing.

These would make a great personalized gift for someone going away to college or as giveaway at a birthday party or sleepover. Add a name to the bag and make it even more special.
